Some people are afraid only of cold weather while others fear touching cold objects. In addition, the definition of cold varies widely among individuals. Some people with cryophobia fear only items or temperatures that are below freezing, while others are afraid of anything that they perceive as cold to the touch. Its important to note that this fear can be extreme and is not to be confused with the simple dislike for cold objects. Just because you prefer not to come into contact with cold doesnt mean you suffer from cryophobia. Cryophobia and Winter Weather Cryophobia is often worse during the winter months, even for those who specifically fear cold objects. Snow and ice may seem unbearable, while objects that always feel cold, such as metal items, feel even colder during the winter. However, the sensation of cold is different for everyone. It may be difficult for a person who feels cold when the temperature dips below 70 F to understand cryophobia in someone who feels comfortable at 55 F. Yet that persons fear is no less real. Cryophobia may also be at the heart of the fear of winter activities. Even if you are generally comfortable in colder weather, you might dread spending the day skiing or sledding. You might also worry about something going wrong, possibly finding yourself in a situation where you are feeling cold but are very far away from a warm shelter. Causes Cryophobia is more likely to occur in those who have had a significant negative impact from the cold. For example, if you have experienced hypothermia, fallen through the ice, or been stuck in a snowdrift, you may be more likely to develop this fear. The negative experience need not have happened to you directly. If someone you know has been impacted by the cold, you may also be likely to develop cryophobia. Even watching news reports of a particularly bad accident can trigger the fear in some people. Those who suddenly move or travel from a relatively warm climate to one that is much colder may also be at increased risk. However, cryophobia can also occur without any previous negative experiences at all. Some people simply perceive cold more sensitively than others, and some interpret it as not only uncomfortable but frightening. A general negative perception could, over time, escalate into a full-blown phobia. Managing Cryophobia Many people find that they can manage milder cases of cryophobia with self-help techniques. Dressing warmly, avoiding unnecessary time outdoors, and keeping the house toasty warm can go a long way toward alleviating mild fears. More severe cases, however, can be life-limiting. Some people are unable to travel to school or work, avoid social occasions, and become isolated during the winter. Over time, a severe fear of cold can even lead to additional phobias including agoraphobia. If your fear is severe, consider seeking professional assistance. Like all phobias, cryophobia responds well to a variety of treatment methods. You may never learn to love ski vacations, but with help and hard work, there is no reason for cryophobia to take over your life.

Sources Of The Fdi Flowing Into The Caribbean Region
The second objective of this is paper is to briefly discuss the sources of the FDI flowing into the Caribbean region. . Most of the information was collected from the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean as it is the leading source of information on investment in the region. Foreign Direct Investment into the Caribbean comes from all over the world and not from just the United Kingdom and the United States of America as most would expect. Canada as well as Latin American countries have begun to increase their investments in the region. Additionally, investments originating from the Asia have also been expanding over time with countries such as Japan and Korea capitalizing in the industrial sectors. Additionally, as relationships between China and the English- speaking Caribbean deepen and strengthen, the FDI inflow into the region from China has also multiplied. There is some presence of Indian investment but this is predominantly in countries with a high conce ntration of Indian descendants such as Trinidad and Tobago. Baroda Bank (Indiaââ¬â¢s International Bank) located in both Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Bahamas is the largest Indian investor but there are other small companies operating as well (ECLAC 2012). Domestic Violence A Cause of Homelessness in Women Essay
As soon as we moved into this house, you think you can have your way. You are my wife and I tell you what you can do and what you cant do. This kind of statement is typical of what a battered woman knows to be the only truth in her household. Domestic violence is greatly on the rise and is one of the leading causes of homelessness among women in todays society. Rather than approach domestic violence as a direct cause of homelessness, one might hope to understand how such violence could help create the circumstances that might make a woman more susceptible to homelessness. Domestic violence and poverty may intersect with other issues to produce the circumstances that often leave women no other choice but to seek temporary shelterâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The impact of divorce, battering, and other family disruptions in combination with economic insecurity and primary responsibility for their children lead many women towards homelessness. It is believed that half of all homele ss women have been a victim of some form of domestic violence, based on self-reporting and observations of various programs staffers. (National Research Council, 1996). However, the numbers of homeless domestic violence victims may be underestimated because some victims are reluctant to self-report. Homeless women seldom view their abuse as their primary problem and may not reveal that they are victims. In some cases, if a woman reports that she is a victim of domestic violence, a homeless shelter may refuse to accept her for security reasons. Most shelters do not offer services to women unless they conform to the criteria that distinctly makes them part of the particular group the shelter program targets. Programs can be specifically geared towards battered, homeless women and have been a great success in dealing with the emotions of the situation. Much of the writing and public discuss on domestic violence suggests that a woman who escapes a violent relationship is almost always in serious physical danger, and therefore needs a shelter of some sort to escape from a mate who will eventually harm her again repeatedly. string(93) " gets accepted to the school while the black student does not, thanks to affirmative action\." | Does it Still Exist? : Racial Discrimination in Everyday Life| Submitted By: Humphrey Osei Owusu| | | | Jo-Anne MacLellan SEC A 1000 Tutorial #09 | In the 1920ââ¬â¢s, restaurants in the United States were not the same as the restaurants we visit today. Certainly there were servers to serve food and beverages expecting a tip as usual, but that is not what is different. Look toward the window, there is a sign written in big letters: WHITES ONLY AT THIS POINT. We will write a custom essay sample on Todayââ¬â¢s Prejudice Racial Discrimination in Everyday Life or any similar topic only for you Order Now During this time, signs granting access to whites were common, but what does this mean for the races that are not white? Whether one can admit it or say otherwise, racial discrimination will always be part of modern society. The world has faced the issues of discrimination ever since the beginning of time. Discrimination can be defined as the prejudicial treatment based off of different categories. These different categories apply to religion, race, sexuality and gender. Since the earth was formed, the world has been brought up by race. After the discovery of race, the issues of discrimination start. An example of this is with the settlers of Europe. They looked down upon Native Americans as inferior to them. The Natives have been beaten and raped and forced to convert to Christianity by the force of Europeans. Still to this day we still struggle on the topic of discrimination. As mentioned earlier racial discrimination still exists, but we fail to realize that it is happening. Many people believe that discrimination has gotten better, but is it really? In the media, we hear reports about the treatment of minorities in the law. One race can be turned away for job even if they are more than qualified for the position. This paper will argue out of all minorities that experience discrimination, African-Americans experience it the worst. This paper will also explain that although individual discrimination is at a minimum, institutionalized discrimination still exists at an all-time high but heavily concealed. This paper will explore the means of affirmative action through the workforce and education system. It will also explain how people are unaware racial discrimination still exists in our education system, the workforce, and law enforcement What is institutionalized discrimination? Institutionalized discrimination is the indirect treatment of individuals by government, financial institution, schools, hospitals and other large organizations. This kind of treatment includes unfair distribution of rights or opportunities to a specific group. This kind of bias targets a race or religion and is part of the way society is structured. These kind of bias were not implemented by some bigot government, they are implemented by people who believe they are doing what they are instilled to do. But the fact of the matter is institutionalized discrimination has a negative effect on minorities who suffer it. Discrimination in the learning environment is more evident than ever. Education is not solely based on learning, but it is based on social learning, life experience and decision making. Unfortunately for one that is discriminated against, they may value the purpose less than one that is not a victim of discrimination. There are many stories where discrimination against African American students occurred and its effects on them. Ruby Bridges, the first black child to enroll in an all-white elementary school, is a prime example of this. Ruby endured shouting crowds spouting death threats and derogatory names plus the other children wanting nothing to do with her, making her feel isolated. Another modern example of discrimination is the well-known story taking place in Kentucky of a white teacher addressing a black student by the n word causing the teacher to lose his job. The discrimination that is brought on by teacher sends the idea to African Americans that they are not welcome in the school. Because of their past negative experiences in school it causes African Americans to do poor in school due to their lack of motivation. It is also proven that teachers are harsher with discipline on African American students, particularly harsh on boys. In 2012, the New York Times reported a study backing up that claim. The study consists on gathering statistics from 72,000 schools. After that, the results concluded that one in five black boys as well as one in five black girls were more likely to receive and out of school suspension than their white peers. These statistics are reasons why black students have lower scores in contrast to other races. Affirmative action is another policy of discrimination that is as controversial as racial discrimination. This was back in the 60s when black men and women were denied access into public bathrooms, restaurants and even drinking fountains. They were also denied opportunity for employment and education. The policy came in effect back in 1964 when Lyndon B Johnson signed the Civil Rights Acts of 1964. The motive behind this policy is to try to eliminate discrimination as much as possible by giving women and minorities a chance. After a few decades, affirmative action plays a role in college acceptances and employment offers. However the objective is now changed from its initial intentions of equality to now seeking retribution from how blacks were treated. This is how affirmative action can now be interpreted as reverse discrimination. Reverse discrimination is a type of discrimination in a minority group is biased against a majority group. Imagine a white student, who is trying to get into an elite university. This student has a 4. 0 GPA and has all the qualifications into being admitted. On the other hand, there is a black student, trying to gain admission into the same school with a 2. 0 GPA. However here is a quota that needs to be filled and the percentage of white students is higher than the percentage of blacks and other minority. If the quota has not been filled, that means the black student gets accepted to the school while the black student does not, thanks to affirmative action. You read "Todayââ¬â¢s Prejudice Racial Discrimination in Everyday Life" in category "Essay examples" Just like with the education system, affirmative action was implemented for minorities to have equal opportunities. Perhaps in the past, Affirmative action was beneficial. But as of the present time, it seems to create more problems. The ones who are for affirmative action believe the purpose is to seek over compensation for inequality. However, affirmative action tends to do more bad than it supposed to be good. For starters, it leads minorities to believe that they donââ¬â¢t truly qualify for a job. Besides the skills but got it solely based on their race, leading to feelings of inadequacy. Another problem with affirmative action is that one who belongs into the majority is punished for something they have nothing to do with. The white man is responsible for the scrutiny blacks endured, but an individual white man is not. There should be no reason that an honest white man should not be punished for past grievances. Like the phrase says ââ¬Å"two wrongs donââ¬â¢t make a rightâ⬠The inequalities against racial minorities happen to be a thing of the past. It seems like a power trip for minorities to take advantage of this so called policy promoting equality. Racial discrimination is rampant all over the workplace. Surely it is not as extreme as it is from the 1960ââ¬â¢s, but it is not ignored. In 1964, the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 is signed by then president Lyndon B Johnson. The act outlaws discrimination based on oneââ¬â¢s skin color, religion or sex while protecting the rights of African Americans as well as other minorities. It created the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. However according to statistics, it is been proven that 36 percent of minorities experience mistreatment due to their ethnicity. According to an article an example of racial discrimination on the job is can be based off a first name. An experiment done in Boston and Chicago determined the more ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠ones name sounded, the chances of getting a callback were slim. To prove this, researchers sent out resumes to possible employers. Despite being the exact resume, one copy had a ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠sounding name such as Lakisha, while another copy had a ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠sounding name such as Emily. This experiment determined that ââ¬Å"Emilyâ⬠had a 50 percent chance of getting a callback even with an interview included. Discrimination as unfair as someoneââ¬â¢s name is often kept in the dark. No one would hear on the news reporting a case of discrimination against a name that is as ethnic sounding like ââ¬Å"Lakishaâ⬠. But it epitomizes what is wrong with institutional discrimination. Names are chosen for different purposes. Some of those reasons can be for culture, meaning, uniqueness or simply because they like the name. A company should not turn away an applicant for a reason as arbitrary as their name. Therefore one should not bear the scrutiny of having a ââ¬Å"blackâ⬠sounding name. The use of racial discrimination and law enforcement is the most controversial subtopic out of all three and the most portrayed by the media that black males are usually the target. This is a strategic method police officers use to harass African Americans because of stereotypes associated to their race. This act, better known as racial profiling, is a method used to target individuals for suspicion base off of skin color. Most people are familiar with the scenario with an African-American male driving a luxury car. From the perspective of a police officer, this man does not look wealthy, he is not even wearing a business suit, and chances are his car is stolen. This kind of tactic is an injustice to society, an act of discrimination and it also goes against of the Bill of Rights stating free from cruel and unusual punishment. One of the famous accounts of racial profiling comes from the well-known, yet controversial case of the shooting of Trayvon Martin. An unarmed teenager victimized of racial profiling by the neighbourhood watchman targeting him of suspicious behaviour which after a confrontation eventually leads to Martinââ¬â¢s death. The case is a reminder that the world has not come a long way from racial profiling. This is an unarmed teen minding his own business, unfairly being labelled as a troublemaker or in the words of the shooter ââ¬Å"up to no goodâ⬠As much as it is claiming to be non-existent or a thing of the past, the evidence is placed right in front of our faces. I can recall a few times as a kid when I would step into a convenience store with the intention of buying an item, and being watched from the corner of the store clerkââ¬â¢s eye or being subtly followed as I am being unfairly labelled a perpetrator. In conclusion, part of the name of this paper is titled ââ¬Å"Does it still exist? â⬠a question which pertains to the topic of discrimination. Society has come a long way in comparison to society nearly one hundred years ago. But despite societyââ¬â¢s changes the answer to that question is a definite yes.. Racial discrimination, not only against African Americans, will always exist. It will always exist through institutionalized discrimination. Attempts can be made to lessen it, but it will always have its setbacks. Affirmative action is one of those setbacks, being disguised as a solution to racial inequality, but in actuality it should not be overly depended on. It is extremely hypocritical to claim that affirmative action promotes equality. When in actuality, the policy basically lowers standards for education and employment. Thereby giving an advantage to a minority group and that skin color is the reason why they have a college education or have a place in the workforce. Even though discrimination is wrong in the fields of education, the workforce and in law enforcement, it is still being practiced in certain countries. What I can take away from social science and race is that you cannot change the past but you can work on changing the future The source of discrimination is unknown, but as society continues to progress, the more open minded society becomes. One day, the future generation will learn not to judge whether one is good or bad based off of the color of their skin. Work Cited 1. The Moral Status of the Fetus free essay sample
The debate over abortion comes down to one essential issue ââ¬â the moral status of the unborn child. ââ¬Å"Those choosing legalization of abortion will argue that the developing fetus lacks a moral status that would trump a womanââ¬â¢s desire to abort the child. Those against abortion argue by making the opposite claim; that the unborn child, because it is a developing human being, possesses a moral status because of its human existence; and that would clearly trump any rationale offered for its willful destruction.â⬠(1)My moral belief would be that Life begins at Conception, therefore a fetus has just as much of a moral status as a newborn baby. What if someone used these arguments to justify the killing of an infant: ââ¬Å"The baby was conceived through rapeâ⬠-ââ¬Å"The infant is deformed and mentally handicappedâ⬠-ââ¬Å"The motherââ¬â¢s health is suffering as a result of her baby.â⬠Would those who endorse abortion openly justify the killing of an infant using these excuses? No, they would not. (2) The bottom line being, that the fetuss moral status does determine the just or unjust of the abortion, no matter what the situation may be. ââ¬Å"Pro-choicersâ⬠believe that there are situations in which abortions are the solution. Scenarios where an unwanted pregnancy happened due to rape is one of them. The idea that rape victims want to abort children conceived in these horrible circumstances is a common myth in the abortion controversy. 2 In fact, rape victims believe abortion would be another form of violence committed against their body. More than half of these victims that do abort, admit to aborting due to outside influence and 93% of them regret it. Of those that carry, none of them wished otherwise. These victimsà develop a heightened sense for life and find a new respect for it even when the unborn is in the fetus state. So clearly here, the fetus has a moral state, even to the victim. One that is more than ââ¬Å"just a group of cellsâ⬠ââ¬Å"They believe their childs life may have meaning or purpose they do not yet understand. They believe they were given this child for a reason.â⬠(3) Another reason women may look to abortion as a solution is if the fetus faces abnormalities or life threatening situations. At around 15 ââ¬â 20 weeks gestation, women are given the option to undergo an amniocentesis. For some women, this is an option, for others, this is a must due to previous pregnancies with abnormalities.ââ¬Å"This is a test done during pregnancy to get information about the fetus by sampling the amniotic fluid, which contains cells and chemicals which are fetal in origin.â⬠(4) This test is looking for chromosomal genetic problems such as Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Cystic Fibrosis, Fragile X, and Sickle Cell Anemia. After these tests are done, results take anywhere from 10- 14 days. Fetal age is about 22 weeks when the mother is deciding the future of her unborn child. By this time, the babys heart is beating, major organs are formed and maturing, facial features are becoming distinctive, and the mother can now feel the babys movements. Clearly the fetus has a moral status, and yet some women still choose to abort the fetus. Why? Because they do not want to ââ¬Å"Sentence a child to life with an acute handicap?â⬠Or they do not want to sentence themselves? Speaking from personal experience, my younger sister experienced a situation similar to this in August of 2000. She chose to have an amniocentesis test and when she received her results, she was told that there was a slight chance that my nephew Josh would have Downs Syndrome. The news was 3 devastating for all of us, but abortion was never an option. We were going to accept Josh however he was. In November of 2000 he came into this world completely beautiful. 100% normal, and no Downs syndrome. The amnio is only 99.4% accurate, and for some women, thats enough to terminate a life. Not for my sister. When it comes to life threatening situations for the mother, this is probably the most heated situation when it comes to the moral status of the fetus. Does the value of the mothers life outweigh the value of the babys life? Do we save the mother? Or do we save the baby? What is the moral status of the fetus? Is it worth saving? A scenario like an ectopic pregnancy would suggest that we abort the fetus and save the mother. But that does not always have to be the solution. What we rarely realized is that there are several cases where ectopic pregnancies have survived! There are not any cases of ectopic pregnancies in a fallopian tube that have survived, but studies have confirmed that time and patience will allow for regression of the ectopic pregnancy the majority of the time. So chemical or surgical removal of the pregnancy is not always necessary to save the motherââ¬â¢s life after all. However, if it is determined that the ectopic pregnancy does not resolve and the symptoms worsen, surgery may be necessary to save the motherââ¬â¢s life. The procedure does not kill the unborn child because the child has likely already deceased by the time surgery becomes necessary. The procedure is necessary to save the motherââ¬â¢s life, and the death of the unborn baby is unintentional. (2) In all three of these scenarios, three of which seem to be the most delicate in defending the right for women to abort their unwanted pregnancy, we find reason to support why abortion is not the best option. Because no matter the time at which a woman decides to abort, the fetus, a living human being, it does in fact have a moral status. Whether it is two weeks to twenty weeks, from the moment of conception, the moral status is Life.
