Cross-Cultural Health Perspectives Essay Breastfeeding practices around the world are vastly different. There are countries who are active promoters of breastfeeding and others who seem to take the care less attitude. The diverse approaches to breastfeeding found between and within societies are largely based on cultural rather than individual differences. For the purposes of this paper, comparisons between Iran and Australia concerning the act of breastfeeding will be looked at along with ideas of how to improve the initiation and duration rates and a discussion of the benefits of increasing initial breastfeeding and continuing to do so for the health benefit of the child and mother. Presently, in Iran, breastfeeding is viewed as an openly society norm and it all stems from a religious background in a country that believes in the total care of an infant and who is willing to provide the most optimal care possible. It is interesting, that 100 percent of the hospitals in Iran are in complete agreement and following the â€Å"Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)† as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Mothers are given free opportunities to attend antenatal classes and a lot of time and attention is placed on the initial bonding time as well as the 24 hour rooming in the hospital. Iran has also taken the initiative to standardize their health education that is provided from medical staff to any literature and training that is provided to the mother and family. Specifically, mothers are educated on the adverse effects of man-made formulas and supplies that are not beneficial to the children, which include the negative long term effects of using such products. Home and follow-up care is also provided free of charge up to two years of age where the health professionals reinforce continuous breastfeeding, which greatly encourages the mothers to keep going. Working mothers are granted four months of paid leave that is increasing to six months in the near future. (Zaeeai, Obrien, Fallon, 2007). Australia in contrast, maintains inconsistencies in regards to breastfeeding. It is a country that has chosen not to adopt the World Health Organization program of the BFHI and therefore has an incredibly low rate of 4. 5 percent of the women who breastfeed. Fascinatingly, it is not the norm in Australia to be open about breastfeeding or to even start and continue for the recommended two year length. The health professional opinions of breastfeeding are also inconsistent and are much different than Iran’s. They take the stance that breastfeeding provides no more benefit than using artificial means of feeding a child. With the professionals unconvincing attitude it is no wonder that the country does not provide accessible and affordable antenatal classes to their mothers. During the hospital stay, alternative means of feeding the baby are presented to the mother in addition to the non encouragement of rooming-in after delivery and the avoidance of skin-to-skin contact with their babies. For the working mother, only 23 percent of the mothers are granted maternity leave which on average is a total of eight weeks. (Zaeeai, Obrien, Fallon, 2007). Improving the breast feeding initiation and duration rates for Iran, although they are very good, could be accomplished by increasing the positive feedback to the mothers each time they are seen to encourage them to keep it up the great work and remind them of the benefits they are providing their children and themselves. They could also be improved by increasing the media advertisements in communities such as billboards and educating high school and college students about the critical information. (Zaeeai, Obrien, Fallon, 2007). Initiation and duration rates for Australia could be improved by not taking the baby out of the room when the mother wants to rest in the hospital. Instead of encouraging the mother, adopt a hospital policy that all babies will room-in with the mother immediately after birth, because the 60 – 90 minutes after are the most critical to establishing the bond. Also, not having the alternative formulas available for the mother’s when they ask for it. (Murphy Mullaly, 2009). It is a total mind modification that must take place within the medical community as well as in the country to make the change for the better to breastfeed babies. (Zaeeai, Obrien, Fallon, 2007). Developing a BFHI program in Australia would involve an entire country shift of thinking about breastfeeding. It would be a massive educational campaign with statistics, articles and advertisements. Providing consistent antenatal classes that are available to everyone at a minimal or no cost to the mothers along with follow-up care that is included for up to two years. It is important for Australia and clinicians to get on board with breastfeeding. The adverse effects must be talked about and collectively the country as medical professionals must come together and agree that the benefits of the man-made formulas are not even close to the long term benefits of a mother’s milk. It is just a matter of taking on the responsibilities and educating the public on the benefits of breastfeeding and following through. The scene may have different characters, but the script is usually the same. Parents have always attempted to help their children with homework. This help ranges from a short occasional explanation to total completion of the task by the parent. Whatever the case, numerous problems exist. In an attempt to cope, parents will use trail and error, bribery, threats, reasoning and anything they hope will work. For some children, school can be a stressful place. After spending most of the day in school, children are typically given additional work to be completed at home. Here is the question what is the purpose of homework? All people can agree it is used to reinforce on what the children learned during school. But is it really helpful for kids to spend time to do homework instead of doing what they should really do? Such as playing outside or learn to help doing chores? Thats look at the merits and demerits of doing homework. Merits: Homework obviously helps kids study on what they learned during school. It can also help some kids to research and obtain some useful information which they might not know or miss in class. Homework can also give kids a sense of responsibility; this is a very important thing that can affect kids growth during life. Believe it or not, doing homework can actually be a way of exercising! Doing homework prevent kids from watching TV. Demerits: Homework prevents kids to learn and understand many things. For example, a child will never learn what the true beauty of the nature is if he is just sitting on a chair and doing homework all the time. Homework can make children to be sick and tired of school, many kids in the world despise school mainly because of homework. School is very important thing in a kids life since it is the place where all kids education is received. Children dislike or even hating go to school can be a very bad thing. I have come home after spend 6 hours at school and take more 2-3 hours homework. I am worn out. Sick and tired on this kind of routine. Haniya (10th class)- Homework is good. If you dont do your homework now, you must feel regret in future and end up having the worst job in the world. Whatever job you want be you still need knowledge and you can get that from your homework. Bilal (9th class)- I just feel like this homework is keeping me away from the things I really want to do. They spend at least 5 hours in school. When they are at home, they want to play. They want to spend time with us. They want to explore the outdoors. In my opinion homework is necessary for students because homework provide then a chance to revise what they learn in school and this is good for their batter result. If students miss something in school during homework their parents can help them. As you can see, homework has more negative effects than positive on the children today. I absolutely agree that too mush homework can have a negative impact on children. After a 5-6 hour day in school, homework should take another 3-4 hours. Think of how you would feel if, after a long hard day at work, you had to bring home 4 more hours of work each and every day. When would you have time to talk to your family? What emotional state would you find yourself in after spending ten hours of each week day working? Too much homework can rob children time to play, relax, interact with others, and participate in other events such as sports or the arts. Too much homework may lead to negative feelings about school and education. The sad fact in todays school system is that a teacher often does not have enough individual time to spend with each student. And some students can be left behind if they do not understand the previous concept before moving on to the next. This is one reason I find about the homework importance. It lets you see how your children are doing in different areas. If student did not understand what teacher was saying, parents can help them. I come at this point homework can be detrimental. Children in class 2 have less than 20 minutes of homework per day. 3rd to 6th grade students should have less than 60 minutes per day. Homework for older students will very by grade level, school curriculum, and subject area. So there has to be a balancing point between too much and too little homework.

Leonardo Da Vinci A Renaissance man in Renaissance times, Leonardo Da Vinci frequently defied a simple description. As a scientist, inventor, artist, and so much more, Leonardo Da Vinci’s works continue to impact our lives even now. Born on April 15th, 1452 in Anchiano (now a part of Italy), Leonardo came into a world on the brink of change. The Italian renaissance was sweeping through the peninsula during Da Vinci’s lifetime and he would soon come to be one of its foremost figures. While there is not a great deal known about Leonardo’s early life, it does not seem atypical from that of a normal boy born into a fairly wealthy family during that time period. Born of a notary named Ser Piero and a peasant woman named Catarina, Da Vinci was an illegitimate child. However, at age five, he moved from his birthplace to Vinci, which is in the Tuscany region of Italy, to live with his father. While there, Leonardo began his formal education. Beginning with reading, writing, and arithmetic, Da Vinci excelled at his studies and soon moved on to an apprenticeship with a man named Andrea del Verrocchio in 1466. Verrocchio, a Florentine artist, was known for his works in several different fields of art. He practiced sculpture, painting, and also worked with gold and bronze. Leonardo continued under the tutelage of Verrocchio for several years, studying these different types of art. In 1472, Leonardo had completed his apprenticeship and had his name entered into the Florentine book of painters, which signified that he had officially joined the ranks of the Painters’ Guild. Though he had completed his apprenticeship with Verrocchio and joined the Painters’ Guild, he did not yet leave his master’s house. â€Å"A man can fall in love only once in his entire life because the other emotions are just product of forced attraction.† -Albert Einstein The short story entitled Lasting Love by Guy De Maupassant is a reflection of unrequited love. It also argued if the strong passion among people called â€Å"love† can only happen once in a lifetime. The first idea was about the main character a poor Madam chair-mender who has grown to love somebody for fifty-five years, and nobody else. She was deeply enamoured by this man who has never reciprocated her love despite all the sacrifices she has made, and despite the length of time she has been waiting for him. In the story I was also questioned: â€Å"do women love more than men love women?† â€Å"There is no denying the fact, only women know how to love.† The story also emanates a form of feminism. The whole story shows how soft-hearted most women are especially when they are enchanted by love. The story seemed to say that women are more vulnerable to being foolishly captivated when it comes to love. When females love, they give their everything. Once they fall, it would be very hard for them to get up. Loving here is defined as sharing with an open hand, giving until it hurts. Women, being emotional creatures are more likely to be swooned over by the feelings and are more likely to expose themselves to being hurt. The whole point of the story for me was that â€Å"love† should never be confused with just mere passion. Passion needs ignition. It needs sustenance from another force. But real love is best defined when you do things unconditionally, despite the pain, the many hurts just for one second of happiness. It makes you bear all things. It can make you do the foolish  things, just because you care for the other person. It never expects anything in return but it only wants to give and show itself. In some way, the love in the story has a touch of platonic love, like a form of chaste love. Love was argued to happen only once, and once it comes it endures until the end. It is real love if it endures, like a real jewel that continues to shine despite time and circumstances. I also think that in love, all is fair. I do not think there is any superior sex when it comes to love or there is somebody who loves more, I think they just love differently. It would be very hard to quantify an emotion very special to human beings-which is love.
